Second Shooter [filed under ‘better to show than to tell’]

June 27, 2014

Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” -Dorthea Lange

I’ve written before about the benefits of having a second photographer at your wedding, BUT, it’s been a while, so I thought I’d bring up the subject again.

I also wanted to highlight some AWESOME moments my second photographers caught last year, next to my own lead photographer images to show just what I mean, when I say two have a better chance of catching important sweet moments from your day and fantastic different perspectives.

So, listed below are the main advantages of having a second photographer.

1. Two different angles.  This seems simple, but there are some sweet shots the lead photographer misses because they are approaching the location and couple in a certain way.  My seconds know I want different angles, different perspectives so they don’t just shoot over my shoulder to get the same exact shot I’m getting.

2. Candid moments when the lead photographer is working with a group, the second has a chance to see candid images of mom and dad watching, or the groomsmen being weird with the bouquets, moments the lead photographer might not even realize are happening.

3. Same moment happening in two different locations.  My biggest example of this is when dad and the bride are hiding waiting to walk down the aisle, and the groom is waiting patiently at the front of the church.  There’s beautiful tension/nerves/giggles/sweetness in both those moments.

4. Details and unique crops.  The lead photographer is getting those images every bride wants, a solid close up of the two of them, a full length image featuring that gorgeous dress.  What they might be missing though, is that sweet way you hold hands, or the grooms hand delicately touching the brides back.

5. Second photographers can be in charge of lists to make sure we did every family image requested, and to make sure we’ve got every location requested.  SUPER helpful to make things run smooth, and quick to get everyone onto partying!

6. Lastly, while moments aren’t guaranteed, we do our best to catch all the important ones.  On a technical level, if my camera decides to freak out during the kiss, my second photographer will also be on it, so it’s more likely we’ll have at least one image of that 3 second alter kiss ;).

I do offer a one photographer package, because I totally understand budgets, and having to figure out what is most important and what you can cut out from the wedding.  Hopefully with this post, you are better equipped with the knowledge of what you’re really paying for when you hire a second photographer, so you can make the best decision for your wedding.

Hope this post was helpful!
