Andrew’s 90th Birthday! South Bend, Indiana Personal Post

May 23, 2017

“Let us never know what old age is. Let us know the happiness time brings, not count the years.” -Ausonius

There are some moments in life that as soon as they happen, you realize that moment was SO special.

Our baby boy is named after his great grandfather [on Ronald’s side of the family], Andrew.  Great grandpa Andrew has had a few strokes, wanders around mostly in a wheelchair, and has some memory issues/dementia [he knows he is familiar with his family, but can’t remember anyones names, and sometimes how they are connected to him].  He has caretakers around who hang out with him, cook for him, help him get around and chat with him.  And while he is different than pre-stroke, he definitely still has spunk to him, and that ever curious mind, thinking and creating and dreaming up possibilities.

Zander’s birth announcement is proudly displayed on a shelf at Andrews home, and family and the caretakers have talked to him about his little name sake since he was born back in February.

A couple weekends ago, to celebrate Andrew’s 90th birthday, we traveled up to South Bend, for a quick weekend trip.  Not only did Zander get to meet cousins, and aunts and uncles, but he also got to hang out with great grandpa Andrew [‘Poppy’].  And YOU GUYS!!!!

I video’d them meeting for the first time.  And it’s… well, it’s just perfect [okay, I’m not a videographer, so that part is not perfect, but THE MOMENT is perfect].

In case you didn’t catch it, in the middle Andrew says, “Don’t mark on me!” [which I’m pretty sure he’s telling Zander not to pee on him.  ha ha ha!], and then he asks if we’re scared of him [decent question ;)].

So yes, THOSE moments.  I’m grateful for moments like this in general, that I can remember.  I’m super grateful that this moment was video’d.

Hope you all are catching those moments and treasuring them in your mind forever.

*four generations! Great Grandpa, Uncle, Dad and Z!
