Emma and Derek! South Bend, Indiana Wedding Photography

August 29, 2017

“And all I know is I’m just glad to see you again.” – Nora Jones

While I might not live up in South Bend anymore, I SOOO enjoy coming back into the city [especially since I don’t have to drive through Kokomo anymore :)].  Seeing how the city keeps transforming and growing and beautifying is so lovely! [Shout out to Mayor Pete!]

And then of course, the whole photographing weddings at the Basilica on Notre Dame University’s campus is pretty delightful ;).

While wandering around campus, Emma told me her and Derek had an agreement.  Since they were getting married at her alma mater, they had to do their engagement session at his alma mater [IU, back in the fall, if you don’t remember it, CLICK HERE, you will not be disappointed].  And you guys, while there IS a lot of walking when you get married or have your engagement session on campus, campuses really are BEAUTIFUL locations for photographs.  If you’ve been following along, you know that I love me some awesome architecture to incorporate into your portraits, and what better architecture than big beautiful campus buildings!  [Of course this isn’t true of all campuses, but IU and Notre Dame definitely fit the bill].

And Emma and Derek’s wedding was exactly as I anticipated.  Beautiful, loving, warm, elegant, and just full of class.

My favorite parts of this wedding: Emma’s amazing dress [I don’t know her that well, but from what I know, it just fits her personality SOOOOO well!], Emma’s awesome jewelry borrowed from her grandmother, Emma and Derek’s super adorable first dance, the amazing and odd August weather that made hanging out on the patio at Blue Heron so delightful and the awesome/fun/laid back bridal party.

I’m so excited to share these images of your day!  Peter and I loved hanging out with you!  Hope your first few weeks of marriage are going amazing!!!

~Maike

*shout out to second shooter Peter!  He shot the above image and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  It’s seriously so cool.

*I mean, my shot isn’t too bad either :). #handsomegroomandgroomsmen

BRIDE & GROOM Q&A:

Most memorable moment?

E: The doors of the church opening and seeing Derek at the end of the isle and all of our friends and family on the way down the isle.

D: For me, it was our first dance. We had taken classes and really worked at it but it was a surprise to everyone else!

Advice for future brides/grooms?

E: Try to enjoy the little moments of the day as much as possible. It goes VERY quickly!

Funniest memory?

E: We had a Catholic wedding and while Derek isn’t Catholic he did go to a Catholic grade school. At one point during our ceremony he started laughing to himself. When I ask why he said it was because he was amazed he still remembered all the words to the prayers and that it showed what a good job our grade school principle had done.

D: Same as Emma’s

If you could do it all over would you change anything?

E: I wish we had more time to spend with everyone at the reception!

D: No.

Honeymoon?

We did take a honeymoon. We went to Maui for just over a week and it was wonderful! It was the perfect mix of having plently of activities to do and also doing nothing at all.

Lastly, are there any other vendors that you LOVED and want to give a special shout out to?

Polly McCarthy at Poppies was AMAZING! I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted at our first meeting so we just talked about colors and styles I liked. By the end of the meeting she had drawn all of the centerpieces and the chandelier piece and I knew she was the right person for the job.
